Why do I have to prove my identity?

Checking identity is an important way of fighting money laundering, identity theft and other finiancial crimes. Criminals use false identities and addresses to open accounts or buy products. Using a false identity makes it difficult to trace the money back to the criminals. This can be used to assist money laundering.

Checking your identity makes it more difficult for criminals to use false names and addresses or the identiity of innocent people. It allows law enforcement agencies to detect and investigate crime.

This is why the law says the Credit Union must identify new customers.
